Belonging to the 493rd TFS, 48th TFW of the United States Air Force. Crashed on 7th December 1982 while on a night time automatic-flying training exercise from RAF Lakenheath. Despite having terrain-following radar it flew straight into a rock face on Sgurr na Stri at the southern end of the Isle of Skye. The pilot Major Burnley L Rudiger (37) from Norfolk, Virginia and the Weapons systems operator 1st Lt Steven J Pitt (28), from East Aurora, New York both perished in the crash.
